Abstract

Virtual museums represent one of the most prominent applications of virtual reality (VR), playing a pivotal role in disseminating archaeological and cultural heritage, as well as artifacts that visitors might otherwise find challenging to access or conceptualize in their original states. Virtual visitations facilitate comprehensive exploration of museum galleries and collections, enabling both macro-level observations of the general structure and micro-level examinations of intricate exhibit details. Furthermore, this technology provides access to remote or inaccessible cultural and natural heritage sites. Concurrently, virtual applications offer immersive insights into historical events associated with these cultural and natural landmarks, including daily societal life, traditional crafts and professions, and historical battles. Among the emerging paradigms in this domain is the digital reconstruction of ancient civilizations, accomplished through the synthesis of contemporaneous historical, environmental, and climatic data. The significance of virtual museums is particularly evident in sustaining continuous engagement with cultural heritage during geopolitical or public health crises that preclude physical attendance—as demonstrated during the COVID-19 pandemic and periods of armed conflict, throughout which virtual tours persisted unabated. Consequently, there is an imperative to expand the global deployment of this technology, a process significantly catalyzed by artificial intelligence (AI) applications that optimize exhibition methodologies, pedagogical frameworks, and preservation techniques.
